Abstract

Urban Ghanaian markets in Nigeria are significant sources of waste generation. Eco-friendly waste management strategies have been introduced to address environmental challenges. Qualitative data was collected through observations, interviews, and document reviews in selected markets, ensuring representativeness of diverse waste management practices. A notable theme emerged regarding market traders' willingness to adopt biodegradable bags for bulk food items, with a 70% adoption rate observed. The strategies show promise but require further refinement and community engagement for sustained success. Enhanced training programmes and policy support are recommended to facilitate wider implementation of eco-friendly waste management solutions in urban markets.
