Afrofuturism as a Lens to Explore African Futures in Eritrea
Abstract
Afrofuturism is a cultural movement that explores alternative visions of the future for black people and their diasporas. In Eritrea, this concept can be used to analyse contemporary societal shifts and potential paths forward. The research employs qualitative methods including thematic analysis of existing literature and semi-structured interviews with key informants from various sectors in Eritrea. Data collection was conducted through online platforms and face-to-face meetings. Themes emerging from the data include visions of technological advancement, environmental sustainability, and cultural revitalization as central to future narratives in Eritrea, reflecting a blend of traditional and modern aspirations. Afrofuturism offers valuable insights into how African societies envision their futures, highlighting both challenges and opportunities for development in Eritrea. Policy makers should consider Afrofuturist perspectives when formulating strategies that aim to address socio-economic disparities and promote inclusive growth in the country.
