Abstract

Historically rooted challenges in African governance are increasingly impacting contemporary societies, particularly South Africa as a case study within broader African Studies. A mixed-methods approach combining qualitative interviews with quantitative survey data to examine perceptions and experiences related to governance challenges across various sectors. Survey results indicate that over 70% of respondents attribute the current inefficiencies in public administration, corruption, and lack of accountability to historical practices and policies. The analysis underscores the enduring impact of colonial legacies on contemporary governance structures, necessitating a reevaluation of policy frameworks aimed at fostering more inclusive and effective institutions. Policy recommendations include the establishment of targeted educational programmes addressing historical grievances and promoting participatory governance models to enhance public trust and engagement.
