Climate Change and Human Security in the Sahel: A Comparative Analysis of Vulnerabilities in Rwanda

Abstract

This study examines how climate change impacts human security in the Sahel region of Rwanda. Qualitative data collection methods were employed through interviews with local residents and focus group discussions, supplemented by secondary data from government reports and environmental studies. A notable finding is the significant increase in agricultural productivity loss due to erratic rainfall patterns, affecting over 40% of surveyed farmers. Rwanda faces substantial challenges in mitigating climate-induced vulnerabilities through inadequate infrastructure and social safety nets. Enhanced early warning systems and investment in resilient farming practices are recommended to improve human security.
