Abstract

Water scarcity is a significant challenge in the Nile Basin, affecting countries such as Kenya where it impacts agricultural productivity and socio-economic development. A mixed-methods survey was conducted among key stakeholders including government officials, farmers, and community leaders to understand their perceptions and practices regarding water management and conflict resolution mechanisms. Survey results indicated that approximately 60% of respondents perceived the lack of equitable water distribution as a major source of conflict. Additionally, over half of participants reported using traditional mediation methods rather than formal legal channels for resolving disputes. The survey highlights the importance of integrating community-based initiatives with formal mechanisms to enhance effective conflict mitigation strategies in the Nile Basin of Kenya. Policy makers should prioritise equitable water resource management and invest in training programmes for community mediators to address emerging conflicts related to water scarcity.
