African Universities' Role in Knowledge Production and Dissemination in Egypt: An Analysis

Abstract

Egypt is a significant case study for examining African universities' contributions to knowledge production in the field of African studies. The country's educational institutions have historically played crucial roles in fostering scholarly engagement with Africa’s diverse cultures, histories, and contemporary challenges. This analysis employs a qualitative approach to explore data from the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education’s annual reports and selected university websites. The method involves thematic content analysis of publications and conferences organised by African studies departments across Egypt's major universities. The findings indicate that while there is substantial research output, the proportion of high-impact publications in leading journals remains modest, suggesting room for improvement in scholarly engagement with international academic standards. This study underscores the importance of continuous support and collaboration between African universities and regional bodies to enhance knowledge production and dissemination within the field of African studies. Recommendations include fostering partnerships with global research networks, increasing investment in digital platforms for sharing research outputs, and developing joint training programmes for young scholars.
