Enhancing Women Farmers' Market Access within Agricultural Value Chains in Nigeria: Insights and Strategies
Abstract
Agricultural value chains in Nigeria are crucial for economic growth, yet women farmers often face barriers to market access, limiting their potential contributions. A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating qualitative interviews with quantitative surveys to assess market participation and barriers faced by women farmers. Women farmers reported a significant challenge (56%) in accessing formal markets due to inadequate infrastructure and discriminatory practices. Market linkages were identified as key areas for intervention. The study underscores the importance of fostering inclusive agricultural value chains that support women farmers, particularly through improved market infrastructure and policy reforms. Policy makers should prioritise investments in rural road networks and fair trade policies to facilitate greater access for women farmers. Agricultural extension services must also be tailored to address specific needs identified by women farmers.
