Evaluating Market Performance Indices in Women Farmers' Markets: An Urban Food Security Dynamics Study in Abidjan, Ivory Coast and Senegal
Abstract
Urban food security dynamics in West Africa have been significantly influenced by women farmers' markets as informal economic spaces. This study aims to explore how market performance indices can be utilised to enhance understanding of these markets. The mixed methods approach includes both quantitative analysis of MPI data and qualitative research involving interviews with market vendors and consumers in Abidjan and Senegal. MPI revealed a significant fluctuation in prices across markets, with a 15% increase observed in Abidjan compared to Senegal. Qualitative findings underscored the challenges women farmers faced, including limited access to credit and infrastructure. This study provides valuable insights into market performance indices for women farmers' markets in West Africa, highlighting both successes and areas needing improvement. Policy recommendations include enhancing agricultural extension services and improving market infrastructure to support women farmers’ businesses better.
