Abstract

Early childhood development centers (ECDs) play a crucial role in enhancing literacy among primary school students, particularly in regions with limited educational resources. The study employed a combination of pre- and post-assessments with standardised tests for quantitative analysis, supplemented by semi-structured interviews to gather qualitative insights from students and teachers. A significant improvement in literacy scores was observed among participants who attended ECDs compared to those without such exposure. Qualitative data revealed positive attitudes towards learning in the classroom environment facilitated by ECDs. Early childhood development centers have a substantial impact on enhancing literacy skills among primary school students, with both measurable and attitudinal benefits evident. Further research should explore long-term effects of ECD programmes and consider scaling up successful interventions to broader regions in Nigeria. early childhood development, literacy improvement, primary education, Kano State
