Environmental Governance and Compliance Practices in Zambia's Mining Sector: An Analytical Study
Abstract
This study examines environmental governance and compliance practices within Zambia's mining sector, focusing on regulatory frameworks and enforcement mechanisms. A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining quantitative data from regulatory filings with qualitative insights obtained through semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in the mining sector and government regulators. The analysis revealed that while there is a robust legal framework governing mining activities, actual compliance rates are suboptimal, particularly regarding water management and waste disposal. Stakeholder engagement has shown mixed results, often influenced by economic pressures and local community sensitivities. This study concludes that enhancing stakeholder collaboration and improving enforcement mechanisms could significantly improve environmental outcomes in the mining sector. Recommendations include strengthening compliance monitoring systems, fostering more inclusive stakeholder participation processes, and developing targeted training programmes for industry personnel on sustainable practices. The empirical specification follows $Y=\beta_0+\beta^\top X+\varepsilon$, and inference is reported with uncertainty-aware statistical criteria.
