Abstract

Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) initiatives have been implemented in Botswana to address environmental degradation and promote sustainable use of resources by local communities. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including semi-structured interviews (n=30) and thematic analysis of participant observations (n=15). Community participation in decision-making processes led to an average satisfaction score of 8.5 out of 10 regarding resource management outcomes. CBNRM programmes have significantly improved local governance structures but face challenges related to equitable benefit distribution and enforcement of regulations. Enhanced community engagement, improved monitoring systems, and policy support are recommended to sustain CBNRM's success in Botswana.
