Supply Chain Resilience Strategies in Côte d'Ivoire’s Vulnerable Agricultural Sector Post-Climatic Disasters
Abstract
Côte d'Ivoire is a significant agricultural producer in West Africa, with its economy heavily reliant on cocoa and coffee exports. The country has experienced recurrent climatic disasters such as droughts and floods, which have severely impacted the agricultural sector's productivity and stability. The study employed a qualitative approach, reviewing existing literature on climate change impacts on agriculture and engaging with stakeholders including farmers, industry leaders, and government officials through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. Data analysis revealed that cocoa yields in the affected regions have declined by an average of 20% due to prolonged drought conditions, leading to significant economic losses for smallholder farmers. The findings highlight the urgent need for improved irrigation systems, crop diversification, and insurance schemes to mitigate climate-related risks within the agricultural supply chain of Côte d'Ivoire. Recommendations include the implementation of government subsidies for drought-resistant crops, development of farmer-owned cooperatives, and establishment of early warning systems to enhance resilience against climatic shocks.
