Abstract

The Zero Waste Initiative in Dakar's residential areas aimed to reduce waste sent to landfills by 50% through community engagement and education. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including surveys (n=300) and focus group discussions (n=25). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics to assess trends and inferential statistics for comparisons. Recycling rates increased by 21% among participants after the initiative compared to baseline levels. Focus groups highlighted educational content as influential in changing waste management practices. Community engagement significantly enhanced recycling efforts, with a notable increase in participation, especially in educationally-focused interventions. Future initiatives should continue and expand on successful elements like community-led workshops and interactive educational materials to sustain momentum.
