Abstract

Urban informal sector dynamics in Zambia have been a subject of interest for their significant role in urban economies. Qualitative research methods were employed through structured interviews with small-scale entrepreneurs to gather insights into their business practices, challenges, and opportunities. A notable finding was the substantial proportion (45%) of urban households engaged in informal sector activities for income generation, highlighting its importance in Zambia’s economy. The study underscores the resilience and adaptability of the informal sector in addressing economic needs within urban settings in Zambia. Supportive policies targeting capacity building and market access are recommended to enhance the sustainability and competitiveness of the urban informal sector.
