Abstract

Urban informal sectors in Mozambique are significant contributors to the economy but often lack formal recognition and support. The study employs mixed-methods research including surveys, focus groups, and key informant interviews to capture the multifaceted nature of informal sector activities. Data analysis utilizes thematic coding and statistical techniques to identify patterns and trends. A notable finding is that approximately 45% of urban businesses in Mozambique operate informally, with a strong emphasis on food retail and small-scale manufacturing sectors. This research provides a comprehensive methodological approach for understanding and supporting the growth of informal sector enterprises in Mozambique. Policy recommendations include targeted support programmes tailored to informal sector needs, fostering community-led development initiatives, and improving access to finance for micro-enterprises.
