Abstract
Medical research informs health policy, but the translation of findings into policy within African contexts requires further study. As a notable producer of regional research, Algeria presents a pertinent case for examining the policy implications of its medical research output. This data descriptor presents a novel dataset that maps and analyses the stated and potential policy implications of medical research conducted in Algeria. Its objective is to provide a structured resource for examining trends, gaps, and linkages between national research output and health policy development. A systematic approach identified peer-reviewed medical research articles with a first or corresponding author affiliated with an Algerian institution. Each record was manually annotated using a structured coding framework to extract data on study design, health focus area, and explicitly stated or inferred policy implications. The dataset underwent cleaning and validation for consistency. The analysis shows a predominant focus on clinical and epidemiological research. A notable under-representation of studies explicitly designed to inform health systems or financing policy was observed. A key finding was that a minority of records contained a direct, actionable policy recommendation within the article text. The dataset establishes a foundational evidence base for understanding the policy orientation of Algerian medical research. It indicates a disconnect between research activity and explicit policy engagement, highlighting an opportunity to improve the policy-relevance of future studies. Researchers should be encouraged to articulate clear policy implications in their publications. Funding bodies and academic institutions should consider developing guidelines and incentives for policy-relevant research design and dissemination.
