A Systematic Review of Sustainable Healthcare Development in the Seychelles: An African Perspective

Sustainable healthcare development is a significant challenge for African nations, balancing resource constraints, population health needs, and environmental considerations. The Seychelles, as a small island developing state, presents a unique case study within Africa, facing distinct vulnerabilities and opportunities. This systematic review synthesises existing literature on sustainable healthcare development in the Seychelles from an African perspective. Its objective is to identify reported key themes, strategies, challenges, and outcomes related to building a resilient and sustainable health system. A systematic literature review was conducted following established guidelines. Multiple academic databases and grey literature sources were searched. Studies were screened against pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, with data extracted and analysed using thematic synthesis. The findings reveal a predominant focus on health system strengthening and climate change adaptation. A key theme was the integration of environmental sustainability into health service planning. The literature frequently highlighted primary healthcare and community-based interventions as foundational to sustainable development. Sustainable healthcare in the Seychelles is conceptualised through a dual lens of strengthening core health services and building climate resilience. While progress is evident, the literature indicates persistent challenges related to financing, workforce capacity, and the sustainable procurement of medical resources. Future policy should prioritise integrated strategies that concurrently address health outcomes and environmental sustainability.
