Integrating Sustainable Development Goals with Maternal Healthcare: A Longitudinal Analysis from Burkina Faso
Abstract
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3, offer a framework for enhancing maternal healthcare in low-resource settings. In Burkina Faso, maternal mortality remains a critical issue, and longitudinal analyses linking maternal health service utilisation with broader SDG indicators are lacking. This study aimed to analyse the longitudinal integration of SDG indicators within maternal healthcare delivery in Burkina Faso. It sought to assess trends in service coverage, identify key facilitators and barriers to integration, and evaluate the association between multisectoral SDG progress and maternal health outcomes. A longitudinal, mixed-methods analysis was conducted using national health survey data, policy documents, and health facility records. Quantitative data were analysed for trends and associations. Qualitative data from key informant interviews and focus group discussions were analysed thematically to contextualise the findings. Analysis showed a significant positive trend in skilled birth attendance coverage, rising from a low baseline to over 80% by the final study period. Integration was hindered by persistent inequities in rural access and fragmented supply chains for essential medicines. Thematic analysis identified community health worker programmes and coordinated policy frameworks as critical enabling factors. Progress towards SDG 3 in Burkina Faso is evident but uneven. Effective integration of maternal health services with broader sustainable development efforts requires strengthened health systems and targeted strategies to address geographical and socioeconomic disparities. Policymakers should prioritise strengthening integrated community-based healthcare and supply chain resilience. Future programmes must explicitly address rural–urban equity gaps and foster multisectoral collaboration to advance maternal health within the SDG agenda.
