Abstract

Wastewater management in Nigerian cities is a critical issue, particularly concerning sewage treatment plants (STPs). Despite government efforts to improve infrastructure and policy frameworks, there are inconsistencies and inefficiencies in their implementation. The research employs a qualitative approach, utilising semi-structured interviews with stakeholders including government officials, engineers, and community members. Data analysis focuses on thematic content. Interviews revealed that while some STPs operate effectively, others struggle due to inadequate funding and technical capacity issues. A notable theme identified was the need for more robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance with standards. The study concludes by highlighting the urgent need for policy alignment with practical implementation strategies, emphasising the importance of stakeholder collaboration and financial support in improving wastewater management systems. Recommendations include strengthening regulatory frameworks, increasing investment in STP maintenance, and enhancing public awareness campaigns to foster better community involvement.
