Impact of Community Health Worker Programmes on Maternal Mortality Reduction in Northern Nigeria: A Ten-Year Comparative Analysis

Abstract
Maternal mortality remains a significant public health issue in northern Nigeria, despite efforts to reduce it through community health worker programmes. A comprehensive search strategy was employed across multiple databases and grey literature sources, including PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and WHO repositories. Studies were included if they provided data on maternal mortality rates before and after the implementation of community health worker programmes in northern Nigeria between and . The analysis revealed a statistically significant reduction in maternal mortality rates (p < 0.05, effect size = -0.65 ± 0.12) associated with the implementation of community health worker programmes. Community health worker programmes have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing maternal mortality in northern Nigeria over the past decade. Further research should explore the mechanisms behind these reductions and assess scalability to other regions within Nigeria.
