Impact of Prescribing Guidelines Awareness Programmes on Antibiotic Resistance Levels in Urban Hospitals in Nigeria
Abstract
Urban hospitals in Nigeria face challenges related to antibiotic resistance, necessitating strategies to improve prescribing practices. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including surveys and interviews with healthcare professionals to assess knowledge and attitudes towards prescribing guidelines. Participants reported an increase in awareness about appropriate antibiotic use after the programme (85% of respondents). However, resistance levels remained stable at a median level of 12.3% The Prescribing Guidelines Awareness Programme showed promise in enhancing knowledge and attitudes towards prescribing guidelines but had no significant effect on reducing antibiotic resistance. Further research should investigate the long-term effects and explore strategies to increase adherence to prescribed guidelines. Treatment effect was estimated with $\text{logit}(p_i)=\beta_0+\beta^\top X_i$, and uncertainty reported using confidence-interval based inference.
