Environmental Justice Movements in Resource-Rich Algerian Communities, 2008 Contextual Analysis

Environmental Justice Movements (EJM) in resource-rich regions of Algeria have emerged as a critical area for research within African Studies. A qualitative approach was employed, utilising semi-structured interviews and document analysis to explore the dynamics of EJM within resource-rich areas of Algeria. Socio-economic disparities were evident in communities where environmental resources are concentrated, leading to significant health concerns among local populations. The study highlights the need for equitable distribution of benefits from natural resources and supports community-led initiatives for sustainable development. Policy recommendations include strengthening legal frameworks that prioritise community rights over resource extraction companies.
