Youth Identity and Political Engagement in Urban Botswana: A Policy Analysis

Abstract
Urban Botswana is a microcosm of youth demographics in Africa, with significant disparities in political engagement and identity formation. The analysis combines quantitative data from surveys on youth perceptions and qualitative insights through interviews with community leaders and focus groups among young people. Findings indicate a significant correlation between positive self-perception and higher levels of political participation, suggesting an urgent need for targeted interventions to address negative stereotypes. The study concludes that fostering inclusive youth identity programmes can significantly enhance political engagement and social cohesion in urban Botswana. Recommendation 1: Governments should invest in community-led initiatives that celebrate diverse identities. Recommendation 2: Educational curricula must include comprehensive lessons on civic education.
