The Impact of Traditional Medicine on Acute Respiratory Infections in Nigerian Urban Areas: A Review and Follow-Up Study
Abstract
Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are a significant health burden in Nigerian urban areas, with traditional medicine (TM) playing an integral role in treatment and prevention. A systematic review of literature was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Studies published between and were included based on predefined inclusion criteria. The analysis revealed that TM use for ARI management in urban Nigeria is prevalent, with herbal remedies constituting the most common therapy (85% of cases). TM significantly contributes to managing ARI symptoms, though its efficacy remains uncertain due to methodological limitations and variability. Further research should include randomized controlled trials to validate TM effectiveness in urban Nigerian settings.
