Abstract

HIV/AIDS continues to impact urban Ethiopian communities significantly, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of treatment adherence mechanisms. Fieldwork involved qualitative interviews and observations conducted across selected urban communities. Data was analysed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of medication use and adherence. Traditional healers were used by 42% of respondents in conjunction with modern HIV/AIDS treatments, highlighting the integration of traditional practices within contemporary healthcare systems. The study underscores the importance of understanding both traditional and modern medicine usage to improve HIV treatment outcomes in urban settings. Healthcare providers should incorporate traditional healing into their protocols to enhance adherence rates and patient satisfaction.
