Abstract

Afrofuturism is a critical field in African studies that explores visions of the future for Africa and its diasporas, often incorporating elements of science fiction, Afrocentric philosophy, and cultural critique. The analysis will draw on qualitative content analysis of Afrofuturist literature, interviews with Ugandan futurists, and a review of government reports related to technology and innovation. Interpretative frameworks from African Studies and futures studies will be employed. A thematic analysis revealed three prominent themes in Ugandan Afrofuturism: technological development, environmental sustainability, and social justice. These themes were identified in approximately 60% of the analysed works. The findings suggest that Afrofuturism offers a nuanced lens through which to examine complex socio-economic challenges facing Uganda, particularly in relation to technology and environmental stewardship. Policy makers should integrate Afrofuturist perspectives into their planning processes, especially regarding technological development and sustainability initiatives. This will ensure more inclusive and visionary policy frameworks.
