Abstract

EkoCity Green Building Standards are a set of guidelines designed to promote sustainable urban development in Lagos, Nigeria, particularly focusing on eco-friendly housing developments. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including a survey targeting eco-friendly housing developers, and semi-structured interviews to gather qualitative insights. The study revealed that 45% of surveyed developers adopted EkoCity standards in at least one project, with a notable trend towards compliance increasing over the past two years as perceived benefits outweighed initial costs. While adoption rates are improving, there is room for further incentives and support to encourage broader implementation of green building practices. Policy makers should consider offering tax breaks or subsidies to developers who adopt EkoCity standards, alongside mandatory compliance measures.
