Challenges and Opportunities for E-commerce Adoption by SMEs in Egypt 2001
Abstract
E-commerce has emerged as a significant driver of economic growth in many countries, including Egypt, where SMEs are pivotal to the nation's economy. A qualitative study approach was employed, focusing on interviews with key stakeholders such as entrepreneurs, government officials, and industry experts. SMEs face significant barriers to e-commerce adoption including high initial costs, inadequate digital literacy among staff, and regulatory hurdles. However, there is a growing interest in leveraging e-commerce for market expansion and cost savings. Despite challenges, the potential benefits of e-commerce for SMEs are substantial, warranting supportive policies and resources. Egypt should prioritise developing digital infrastructure, enhancing training programmes for SME employees, and simplifying regulatory frameworks to facilitate smoother e-commerce adoption.
