Climate Change Adaptation Strategies for Coastal Communities in West Africa: A Liberian Perspective

Abstract

Climate change is exacerbating coastal vulnerabilities in West Africa, particularly affecting communities along Liberia’s coast. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining qualitative interviews with quantitative data analysis of community surveys. Focus groups were used to gather in-depth insights into the practical implementation of adaptation measures. Interviews revealed that over 70% of surveyed households have implemented at least one form of adaptation strategy, such as constructing sea walls and relocating vulnerable assets from high-risk areas. The findings underscore the necessity for community-led initiatives in climate change adaptation, highlighting the importance of local knowledge integration into broader policy frameworks. Liberian policymakers should prioritise funding for infrastructure improvements and support community-based adaptation projects to enhance coastal resilience.
