Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Kenya's national curricula aims to integrate environmental, social, and economic aspects of sustainability into educational programmes. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including document analysis and expert interviews to assess curriculum documents and stakeholder perspectives. Findings indicate that while there is some variation in ESD content across subjects, the proportion of curricula incorporating sustainability themes varies significantly (ranging from 10% to 50%). The analysis reveals a need for more comprehensive and consistent integration of sustainable development principles into national curricula. Recommendations include developing a standardised framework for ESD content, enhancing teacher training in sustainability pedagogy, and increasing public awareness about the importance of integrating ESD.
