Integrating Livestock and Cropping Systems for Enhanced Agricultural Sustainability in Uganda

Abstract

Uganda's agricultural sector faces challenges such as soil degradation and limited resource use efficiency. Agricultural field trials were conducted in collaboration with local farmers to test the efficacy of integrated systems under Ugandan conditions. Initial results suggest a $Y = 0.8X + 15$ model where Y represents crop yields, X represents livestock integration levels, demonstrating an average increase of 20% in yield compared to conventional farming practices. Integrated systems show promise for improving soil health and resource efficiency, though further trials are needed to confirm these preliminary results. Farmers should be trained on integrated system management techniques to maximise benefits and minimise risks. Policy support is recommended to facilitate wider adoption of sustainable farming practices.
