Evaluation of Adolescent Mental Health Crisis Management Systems in Ethiopian Secondary Schools

Abstract

Adolescent mental health crises are prevalent in Ethiopian secondary schools, necessitating effective management systems to mitigate their impact on students' wellbeing and academic performance. A mixed-methods approach was employed: quantitative data collection through standardised surveys (N=300), qualitative interviews with school administrators and counselors, and an exploratory case study of four schools. Findings indicate a significant proportion (45%) of students in crisis reported inadequate support systems, with themes emerging around insufficient resources and training for mental health professionals. The findings highlight the need for improved resource allocation and professional development programmes to enhance adolescent mental health crisis management in Ethiopian secondary schools. Implementing a comprehensive training programme for school staff on early identification of mental health issues, coupled with increased funding for mental health services, is recommended.
