Qualitative Insights into Community-Building Programmes for Youth in Nairobi's Slums: Enhancing Social Cohesion in African Contexts
Abstract
Community-building programmes for youth in Nairobi's slums are crucial initiatives aimed at fostering social cohesion and resilience. Qualitative data were collected through interviews and focus group discussions involving young participants and programme facilitators, providing a nuanced view of the programmes’ effectiveness and challenges. Participants reported significant improvements in social cohesion (80% indicated stronger connections within their communities) and increased confidence (65% stated enhanced self-esteem). The qualitative data underscore the positive role these programmes play in enhancing community bonds among youth in Nairobi's slums. Programmes should be tailored to local contexts, incorporating elements that promote inclusivity and mutual respect, ensuring sustainable outcomes.
