Abstract

Community-based opioid treatment programmes have emerged as critical interventions in South Africa's fight against opioid dependence and related health issues. A systematic review of existing research papers focusing on community-based drug treatment programmes for opioid dependence, including methodologies used to reduce dropout rates. Dropout rates were notably high (up to 40%) despite various strategies such as financial incentives and increased social support. While some interventions showed promise in reducing dropout rates, there is a need for more comprehensive and personalized approaches tailored to the specific needs of community members. Programmes should integrate patient-centred care models that address psychological and social factors contributing to opioid dependence.
