Challenges and Opportunities in Post-Conflict African Businesses: A Kenyan Perspective
Abstract
Post-conflict environments in Africa often present unique challenges for businesses seeking to establish or expand operations. A structured survey was conducted among a sample of SME owners and managers across various sectors to gather qualitative insights into their experiences and strategies. The survey revealed that nearly two-thirds of respondents experienced significant delays in securing permits and licences, which hindered business operations post-conflict. Small businesses in Kenya are resilient but face substantial barriers necessitating tailored support mechanisms from government and civil society organizations. Policy makers should prioritise streamlined regulatory processes to reduce bureaucratic hurdles for SMEs. Civil society initiatives can also play a crucial role by providing training and networking opportunities.
